The residential experience outside of the laboratory is a critical part of the Summer Student experience at JAX Genomic Medicine (JAX-GM). Students at the Farmington campus are housed locally in furnished apartments or college campus housing.

Housing and dining

The suite-style dormitory or apartment offers all modern amenities, including a common kitchen and bathroom, shared bedrooms, and separate living room space. Students have 24/7 access to the JAX fitness center on the research campus.  Housing is situated close to a vibrant downtown West Hartford and several popular cultural centers. Shared meals are provided and game nights are common practice. The residence life team includes a JAX Residence Supervisor and Resident Advisor, who help support the development of a close-knit, scholarly community that both works and has fun together.

Residential community and activities

The residential experience for summer students at our Farmington campus is truly a customized mix of greater New England culture and the beauty of the outdoors both near campus and throughout Connecticut.  Students have many opportunities for offsite activities in West Hartford and the surrounding areas including Talcott Mountain, Blue Back Square and beautiful Elizabeth Park.  In addition to a joint-campus gathering that will take place in June (at Medomak Retreat Center in Washington, ME), residential staff and students will work together to plan day trips according to students' interests.

Past activities have included tubing on the Farmington river, attending a Yard Goats game (the local minor league baseball team), spending a day at a nearby beach such as Misquamicut State Beach in Rhode Island, kayaking and day hikes .
